The Celia N. Handley Collection contains a scrapbook of photographs and newspaper clippings about the unveiling of Senator Ernest Gruening's statue in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol Building on October 5, 1977. Also included are a seating diagram of this event, several pages of newspaper articles and photographs about Senator Gruening receiving the Alaska Man of the Year award in 1970, and two glass ashtrays inscribed "In Appreciation of Assistance Rendered during the 1962 Election Campaign for Ernest Gruening." In addition, there are two strips of negatives, and two photographic transparencies from the 1950's.

Ernest Henry Gruening (February 6, 1887 – June 26, 1974) was an American journalist and politician. A member of the Democratic Party, Gruening was the Governor of the Alaska Territory from 1939 until 1953 and a United States Senator from Alaska from 1959 until 1969. Born in New York City, Gruening attended The Hotchkiss School, and he graduated from Harvard University in 1907 and from Harvard Medical School in 1912.
